Cruising and the environment :
ATMO Nouvelle-Aquitaine study :
In 2023, ATMO Nouvelle-Aquitaine conducted an in-depth study to measure the environmental impact of the Port of Bordeaux's maritime and river activities on air quality.
Find out more about the Port of Bordeaux impact study
on atmospheric pollutant concentrations
The study concludes that "The impact of sea and river liners on air quality in the neighborhoods around the port is low. Urban emissions, in particular road traffic and wood heating, are the main sources of pollution to which people are exposed."
Vessels are subject to stringent environmental regulations, and the industry is committed to carbon neutrality by 2050, with an important intermediate step for dockside connections in 2030.
In Bordeaux, the port, the city, the pilots and the companies are going beyond current regulations, with the introduction of an environmental charter that has been binding on companies since 2020, involving in particular:
・The obligation to use the lowest sulfur fuel on the market (0.1%) as soon as it enters the estuary off Le Verdon,
・Speed limitation to 30% of engine capacity for lower fuel consumption and emissions,
・A ban on the discharge of any effluent into the estuary.
